English Pride

Well done to the lads for getting (and deserving) a great result last night. To paraphrase a friend of mine who I watched the game with, the old England would still have got a result - but they wouldn't have got it with style. I'd also like to take back any dissenting comments about Beckham's ability to captain a team (I think I've already done it once but I feel I need to say it again). The haircut's beginning to grow on me too, not literally I hasten to add.

The only criticism I can level is that Heskey looked out of place in the company of Scholes, Gerrard and Beckham (plus the rest of the team - bar Neville). I know he was out of position but simple things like his touch and the ability to pass the ball 4 yards were just lacking from his game. He still looks like the lumbering oaf he always has been, Houllier has not 'turned' him into a 'great player', he's just as good/bad as he was at Leicester. For a short period after he moved his confidence was high and he scored a couple of spectacular goals, and that's it.

Oh, and one more thing...... Phil Neville. Why? Danny Mills should have started, he and Joe Cole were the only highlight of the second half. The main difference between the team in the first and second half was the ability to play from the back.

Keown, Ferdinand and Cole were excellent in the sense that the midfield had the confidence to push up and let them come forward and start attacking from the back. In the second half the only defender to remain on the pitch was the only one who doesn't possess this ability. Southgate, Carragher and Powell looked like second choice and in my opinion are not international class.

And Phil Neville on the right wing..... Phil Neville?!?

Malicious Rumours

Gleamed from callers to the Soccer AM five minute phone in - Someone spotted a teach yourself Spanish book and tape on David Beckham's car seat while he was training at United, Spanish mistress, Spanish arrival at MU or a departure for Mr Beckham? And Zinedine Zidane has apparently enrolled his kid in a school around the Mersey area, a bit far fetched methinks. Although he might be moving to Everton

And finally, Teddy Sheringham has moved to Spuds on a free - two year contract apparently, oh who cares.
